Back Pain and Spinal Decompression

Back pain is epidemic in our country, affecting  more than 21 million Americans.  One common cause of back pain is age. Bone strength and muscle elasticity decrease as we grow older. The discs in our spine lose fluid and flexibility, decreasing their ability to cushion the vertebrae.  Injuries also result in significant back pain for millions of Americans.  Herniated or bulging discs, which press on the delicate nerves in the spine, are a major cause of lower-back pain, causing Americans to spend at least $50 billion a year to treat lower-back pain. In the past, conventional treatment for back pain centered on medication, physical therapy, and surgery and too often these approaches offered little long-term relief.

Now there's a new option for those in suffering chronic back pain: spinal decompression therapy.  Spinal decompression does far more than provide temporary relief from pain. In many cases, it can produce long-term pain relief and healing because it actually corrects the problem of a herniated, bulging, or “slipped” disc.   Pain is caused when spinal discs place pressure on sensitive nerves.  Spinal decompression works by applying a gentle force at the correct angles through the use of a specially-designed treatment machine.  Patients lie face up on the treatment table and a computerized system applies gentle pressure that manipulates the vertebrae in the affected area to stretch and relax the spine.   The gentle stretching relieves pressure on the discs and forms a vacuum that creates a negative pressure that draws herniated material back into the disc, much the same way that toothpaste is sucked back into the tube once you stop squeezing it.  This takes pressure off the sensitive nerves that surround the spine and allows the disc to heal.

Many people report immediate relief of symptoms and have been able to avoid painful back surgery as a result. One study published in Orthopedic Technology Review found that of 219 patients in the study, 86% reported "immediate resolution of symptoms" after completing decompression therapy.   This is an especially attractive alternative to back surgery, which is risky, painful, and expensive.

The Back and Neck Center has two spinal decompression tables.  The Lordex System is designed for low back pain.  The Chattanooga DTS Decompression System has the ability to treat discs in both the neck and low back.

Rx1: Strengthening Muscles of the Lower Back

Once patients complete a cycle of 20 spinal decompression treatments over a period of four weeks, they begin strength restoration therapy on the RX1 machine to re-stabilize their spine.  The muscles of the lower back are the second largest muscle group in the body. Without the strength and support of these muscles, the low back becomes weak and unstable. The RX1 was designed to effectively make your back strong and stable. The RX1 rehabilitation program consists of stretch and flex exercises designed to improve lower extremity flexibility and range of motion.

Hanoun Multi-Cervical Unit: Whiplash & Other Injuries to the Neck

The Hanoun Medical Multi-Cervical Unit is the most effective way to identify and document physical impairment of the cervical spine, or vertebrae of the neck.  The Hanoun Multi-Cervical Unit (MCU) is a digital computerized system that allows for the real-time recording of cervical spine movement and isometric strength in more than 1,000 unique positions. The system also features a dynamic strengthening program for injuries of the neck.

The Hanoun provides effective and reliable evaluation and treatment of neck injuries, including whiplash-associated disorders, muscle-tension headaches, general neck pain, and upper extremity related conditions involving cervical disc compression. Treatment sessions generally range from 15 to 45 minutes in duration. Treatment frequency is usually 3 times per week for a period of 6 weeks. The treatment program is based upon the severity of the injury and progress in treatment.  According to the continuing outcome studies being conducted, over 75% of the patients treated on the Multi-Cervical have responded positively and demonstrated progress toward full recovery. Strength gains averaged 105%, and over 98% of functional gains were maintained six months after treatment.

Pneu-Back System

The Back and Neck Center is equipped with the Pneu Back System for evaluation and treatment for problems of the upper back.  This anti-weighting technology has been approved through the Shiner's Children's Hospitals as a preferred method of Scoliosis management. The Pneu Back System can treat a variety of postural abnormalities and can be used to correct gate problems associated with stroke, hip replacement, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and other balance and movement problems.

First, we will take a back-map. This evaluation maps the position and alignment of your back, producing a fully-computerized digital report and outlining a specific exercise schedule. This also helps to highlight specific ailments.  The exercise protocol  is then applied to the Pneu-Back chair, where you’re given specific exercises for the neck, middle and lower back. Treatment typically lasts twice a week for eight weeks with an progress evaluation midway through your program.  The back mapping feature is also very important to monitor progress during the rehabilitation program offering tangible measures of improvement.

Dry Hydrotherapy (Aqua Massage)

Dry hydrotherapy is a combin- ation of time proven therapies of whirlpool treatments, heat, and massage in a single system.  You are fully clothed, comfortably supported and protected by a durable barrier while streams of heated water (95 degrees) are directed to the treatment area of your body.

The hydrotherapy bed is very relaxing. Many patients say they feel totally at ease with a deep sense of peacefulness.  Others report a tingling sensation as circulation is increased.  Everyone's individual experience may vary, but all share the same opinion: aqua massage is wonderfully therapeutic!  Excellent results have been reported in relieving pain associated with such conditions as fibromyalgia, arthritis, headaches, insomnia, stress, chronic pain, muscle spasms, sports related sprains and strains.
